• What are the ratios of the 700R4, AOD, AOD-EW/4R70W, and C4?
  • a 700R4 has 3.06:1 first, 1.62:1 second, 1:1 third, and .74:1 overdrive
  • an AOD has 2.40:1 first, 1.47:1 second, 1:1 third, and .67:1 overdrive
  • an AOD-EW/4R70W has a 2.84:1 first, 1.55:1 second, 1:1 third, and .67:1 overdrive (which are the same gear ratios for the AOD if you install the FRPP low gearset)
  • a C4 has a 2.46:1 first, 1.46:1 second, 1:1 third, no overdrive

• Can I use a 2wd 700R4 transmission?
  • Yes, but you'll need to get an adaptor kit that comes with a replacement output shaft. Here are your options:
    • 2wd 700R4 to Dana 20 adaptor is 2.5" long (kit includes new output shaft)
    • 4wd 700R4 to Dana 20 adaptor is 2.5" long (kit includes new output shaft)
    • 4wd 700R4 to Atlas transfer case is 3 5/8" long (uses stock output shaft)
    • 2wd 700R4 to Atlas transfer case is 1.5" long (kit includes new output shaft)
  • If you want to mate up to the D20, your adaptor will be 2.5" long.
  • If you choose to get a 4wd core, and want to use an Atlas transfer case, your adaptor will be 3 5/8" long and you'll utilize the stock output shaft for the transmission. This is good for some of you that either have a rebuilt transmission, or don't want to rebuild your existing unit. If you choose to get an adaptor kit with an output shaft for the atlas, we can get this length down to 1.5" long.

• Will a 700R4 fit in my 66-77 Bronco?
  • Yes. The only problem I ran against is that long tube headers may not work with the crossmember setup I tried to use. I chose to get shorty headers instead of making a custom crossmember.

• Will this kit work with a 351? other years of 302/5.0?
  • Yes. The flexplate that comes with the kit is available in three different imbalances, depending on the year and size of your motor.

• What imbalance is my engine?
  • From John Strube, on the EBML: "Ford has been fairly consistent on imbalance for the lines, with only a couple of changes. All 351W engines are 28 oz. All 351C engines are 28 oz. all 289 engines are 28 oz, and 302's/5.0's are 28 oz up to 1982. in 1982, they used a funky imbalance for a short while, like 30 something, then switched to the 52 oz imbalanace, and they have been that way ever since. The 351W remained 28 oz throughout production.

• What torque converter do I use? What flexplate?
  • Stock torque converter, stock flexplate (the latter is supplied with the kit). The kit uses off the shelf parts, in case you ever need to replace anything in the field.

• What should I have done to my transmission to make it more durable?
  • I am most definitely not a transmission expert, so I can only offer you advice along the lines of what I've heard. The most common modifications include a Corvette piston, later sprag, 9 clutch pack, heavier reaction carrier, high boost valves and making the transmission a stand-alone unit with TV cable only (no electronics). I would ***HIGHLY*** recommend that you have the transmission professionally rebuilt by an expert in the field, as they can perform *exactly* what needs to be done for your application. • How do I get my transmission to "stand alone" without electronics?
  • Again, I'd like to reiterate that I am most definitely not a transmission expert. Having said this, I know of two ways - the first is to have your rebuilder modify the valve body to earlier parts, so that the transmission determines line pressure & lockup with the TV cable (this is the route I went). The second is to contact painless wiring and get their kit to control the 700's lockup functions. I have read that the 84-86 models are non-electric and are good, 87-88 are electric (but can be adapted to work as a stand alone) and are the best, and that 89+ have the valve casted over and cannot be run without electronics (but are still good if you don't mind running the painless wiring kit). • What equations can I use to figure out my rpms, etc?
  • MPH = (RPM * ACTUAL TIRE DIAMETER) / (GEAR RATIO * 336)
  • RPM = (MPH * GEAR RATIO * 336) / (ACTUAL TIRE DIAMETER)

• What will my driveline length be with X combination?
  • Glad you asked! Refer to the table below (please note that this is not a definitive guide by any means - it is merely a collection of measurements that I have gathered over the course of the last year, and should not be used as a last word on dimensions).
